After undertaking his baccalaureate work at the College of Charleston, he went on to obtain a PharmD from the College of Pharmacy at the Medical University of South Carolina.
Upon completion of his post-PharmD clinical residency at the University of Kentucky Medical Center, Dr. Bailey then joined the faculty of the Schools of Medicine and Pharmacy at Creighton University, where he was engaged in patient care, teaching and medical research. His work experiences at Creighton led him to pursue a medical degree, and he received a Doctor of Medicine from Creighton University in 1994.
After a successful Family Medicine Residency at Hillcrest Medical Center in Tulsa, OK, Dr. Bailey and his wife Johanna moved to Arizona in 2000, where he joined the Mayo Clinic, first as Lead Physician at the Mayo Fountain Hills Primary Care Center, then as Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Family Medicine, and then as Associate Professor of Family Medicine.
He founded Bailey Family Medical Care in 2003. Dr. Bailey is a Diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine, a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, and has served on the Board of the Arizona Academy of Family Physicians. He has received numerous awards and honors, is a “repeat winner” of the Patients’ Choice Physician Award, Phoenix Magazine’s Top Doctor award, and has received NCQA/ADA Recognition for Excellence in Diabetes Care. He is a sought-after speaker at medical associations and conferences, and he has published many articles in academic journals.
He and his wife, Johanna, were the founding members of Citichurch of Scottsdale, where he served from 2003-2016 on the Board of Directors. Dr. Bailey has also participated in two medical missions to Ghana, West Africa. An accomplished singer, he has performed as lead baritone in numerous operas and other memorable classical performances, including the Spoleto Festival USA, University of Kentucky Opera, and as the inaugural soloist for the Charleston Symphony Chorus.
Doc is always full of info to help to get results in what he does and what I have to do. I feel that he explains everything in depth and it is easy to understand and easy for me to ask questions.

The entire Health Care Team at Dr. Bailey’s medical facility should be commended for their performance during my recent annual physical. Each person contributed to the overall experience. I am an eye doctor in Scottsdale, and I have many opportunities to know the primary care physicians in my area. I had the chance to see quite a few of his patients and they all rave about his care. Subsequently, having gotten to know Dr. Bailey, I was so impressed that I switched to have him become my doctor. He is kind, patient, and incredibly thorough. His “routine” physical includes so many valuable assessments (including nutritional blood work), it takes an hour to review them, and he does so methodically. Kathy, who runs his office, is always pleasant and has great follow-through. Having Dr. Bailey as my doctor is like taking a step back in time. While his diagnostic work is very current, well-researched, and cutting edge, his demeanor takes me back to a time when doctors took more time with patients and were interested in the total patient. I recommend him highly and without any reservation.
